bike and hit the road by 8:30. Today’s ride takes you along the scenic coastal stretch from
Chilaw to Puttalam Lagoon. It’s a relaxed ride on flat terrain, passing through vibrant

Muslim culinary influences—flavorful and full of spice!

Lanka’s serene rural heartland. Today’s journey from the wild surroundings of Wilpattu to the
quiet village of Kumbukwewa offers a beautiful glimpse into everyday life in the countryside.

flavors.
After the ride, you’ll transfer by vehicle (approx. 1 hour) to the ancient city of Anuradhapura,
Sri Lanka’s first kingdom and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
In the afternoon, explore this historic city, including a visit to the sacred Sri Maha Bodhi—a
revered fig tree believed to be the oldest living tree in the world with a known planting date,
brought from India over 2,000 years ago. You’ll also see massive white stupas and ancient
ruins that still inspire awe.
Settle in for the evening, surrounded by the timeless atmosphere of this spiritual city.

Sigiriya.
In the afternoon, unwind with a peaceful kayaking session at Thalkote Lake, one of the most
scenic and tranquil spots in the area. Paddle across calm waters with views of the iconic
Sigiriya Rock Fortress rising in the distance. It’s a magical way to end the day.

charm of the cultural triangle.

Starting around 5:30 AM, you’ll ascend the ancient rock fortress just in time to catch the
golden morning light spreading over the jungle and lakes below. The view from the top is
absolutely unforgettable, and the history behind the ruins—dating back to the 5th century—is
just as fascinating.
After descending, enjoy a well-earned breakfast and a bit of time to refresh.
Next, you’ll transfer to Dambulla Cave Temple (about 40 minutes by vehicle). This UNESCO
World Heritage Site is famous for its series of ancient cave shrines, filled with beautifully
preserved Buddha statues and vibrant murals that stretch back over 2,000 years.

Park—famous for its large herds of wild elephants. Depending on the season, you may also
spot crocodiles, sloth bears, wild boars, jackals, and a wide variety of aquatic birds. It’s a
fantastic way to round off the day if you’re up for more adventure.
The evening is yours to relax and recharge after a full day of exploration and nature.
Day 6 – Village Roads & Forest Trails
Sigiriya → Naula
Cycling Distance: ~50 km | Terrain: Undulating
After breakfast (7:30 – 8:30 AM), it’s time to pedal your way into Sri Lanka’s lush interior.

vehicle transfer needed.

and canal-side paths. Expect gently undulating terrain with plenty of opportunities to stop,
explore, and soak in the rural charm of central Sri Lanka.
Along the way, you’ll enjoy a refreshingly wholesome local meal at a Hela Bojun outlet—a
community food initiative run by the Ministry of Agriculture. These little roadside eateries are
known for serving freshly prepared, traditional Sri Lankan dishes made with local, healthy
ingredients. Everything is made from scratch using rice flour instead of wheat, sugar-free fruit
juices, and herbal drinks like Belimal and Ranawara, known for their medicinal properties.
In the afternoon, if you’re up for more adventure, you can opt for a hike through the Arangala
Forest, a lesser-known gem where you’ll be surrounded by dense greenery, birdsong, and the
soothing hush of nature.
Unwind in the evening in Naula, where the pace of life is slow and the views are lush and
green.
Day 7 – Hills, Waterfalls & Sacred Temples
Naula → Elkaduwa → Kandy
Cycling Distance: ~45 km | Terrain: Climbs & Downhills
After breakfast (7:30–8:30 AM), it’s time to head into the hills! Today’s ride is a bit more
adventurous, as you cycle from Naula to Elkaduwa—a beautiful 45 km route featuring climbs,
breezy downhills, and plenty of rewarding scenery.
The ride takes you through quiet villages, paddy fields, spice gardens, and tea-covered
hillsides. Along the way, you might even pass a waterfall or two tumbling out of the lush
greenery—perfect for a photo stop and a breath of fresh mountain air.
Midway, you’ll enjoy a home-cooked meal in a local village—fresh, flavorful, and full of Sri
Lankan hospitality.
Due to increased traffic closer to Kandy, we’ll hop in the vehicle for a short 20 km transfer
after the ride to ensure a smooth and safe journey into the city.
In the evening, visit one of Sri Lanka’s most sacred and iconic landmarks—the Temple of the
Tooth in Kandy. This beautifully ornate temple houses a relic of the Buddha and is a place of
deep spiritual importance, often filled with the soft hum of prayer and fragrant offerings of
lotus flowers and incense.
Return to your accommodation in Kandy for a peaceful night surrounded by the cool hills.
Day 8 – Highland Ride to the Hill Country’s Heart
Kandy → Walapane → Nuwara Eliya
Cycling Distance: ~55 km (after 10 km transfer) | Terrain: Climbs, downhills, and mountain
roads
After breakfast (7:30–8:30 AM), begin the day with a short 10 km vehicle transfer out of busy
Kandy, avoiding the morning traffic. From there, the real adventure begins.
Today’s ride takes you deep into Sri Lanka’s central highlands, with a mix of challenging
climbs and thrilling downhills. You’ll cycle through a patchwork of tea estates, forested hills,
cascading waterfalls, vegetable farms, and ancient step-paddy fields carved into the slopes.
Along the way, you’ll pass serene Hindu temples, charming mountain villages, and winding
rivers that flow through the lush valleys.
A Western-style lunch will be served en route—giving you a bit of comfort food to refuel
during the ride.
After reaching Walapane, you’ll transfer by vehicle for the final 30 km journey (approx. 1.5
hours) to Nuwara Eliya, a charming colonial-era town often referred to as “Little England.”
Nestled at over 1,800 meters above sea level, the cool climate and British-style architecture

Settle into your hotel and enjoy the crisp mountain air as the sun sets over the tea-covered
hills.

Start your day with breakfast between 7:30 and 8:30 AM, and then gear up for another
unforgettable ride through Sri Lanka’s central highlands.
Today’s 50 km route takes you from the cool colonial charm of Nuwara Eliya to Boralanda, a
region known for its highland farms, misty forests, and stunning natural beauty. It’s a mix of
challenging climbs and sweeping downhills, passing through vegetable and dairy farms, small
hill villages, and even crossing through parts of a famous national park, where you might spot
wild animals roaming near the forest edges.
Ride through stretches of cloud forest, where the mist curls around mossy trees and the air is
fresh and crisp. It’s one of the most scenic and atmospheric cycling days on the tour.
You’ll stop along the way for a choice of local or Western-style food, and if you’re in the mood
for some fun vibes, there are a few lively party-style restaurants that capture the highland
energy with music and friendly locals.
After the ride, enjoy a 22 km transfer (approx. 45 minutes) to Bandarawela, skipping the
steepest uphill section of the day.

from the lush highlands down to the tropical lowlands of southern Sri Lanka.

through rolling tea estates, vegetable farms, rose gardens, and scenic Hindu temples nestled
in village corners. As you descend further, you’ll pass paddy fields, sugarcane plantations, and
roadside stalls selling local fruits—ideal for a juicy snack break!
The route winds through a mix of Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim, and Christian communities,
offering a rich tapestry of Sri Lanka’s religious harmony and cultural diversity. If you’re lucky,
you may even spot wild elephants from a safe distance as you approach the edge of the dry
zone.
Enjoy a traditional local lunch along the way, featuring flavors that reflect the changing
geography and climate.
In the afternoon, take a 30 km vehicle transfer (approx. 40 minutes) through Lunugamvehera
and Yala National Parks to reach your hotel in Kataragama—a transfer made for safety, as this
area is known for elephant crossings on the road.
Once in Kataragama, you can choose how to spend your evening:
• Optional Safari at Yala National Park, one of Sri Lanka’s premier wildlife reserves and your
best chance to spot the elusive Sri Lankan leopard, along with elephants, sloth bears,
crocodiles, and countless bird species.
• Or, take a cultural route with a visit to the Kataragama Temple, a sacred pilgrimage site
revered by Buddhists, Hindus, and Muslims alike—especially lively in the evenings with
colorful rituals and offerings.
Retire for the night in this deeply spiritual and wildlife-rich corner of Sri Lanka.
Day 11 – From Sacred Temples to Elephant Plains
Kataragama → Udawalawe

deep south. Along the way, you’ll pass peaceful lakes, wide paddy fields, roadside temples,
and stretches of open countryside where you might spot wild elephants grazing near the
edges of protected forest zones.
This route also offers a taste of local rural life—you’ll cycle past charming little stalls selling

perfect day to take it slow, soak in the sights, and chat with friendly locals as you pedal by.
A delicious local lunch will be served en route or upon arrival, showcasing the rustic flavors of
the southern region.

branches. As you approach Tangalle, the distant sound of the ocean begins to greet you, with

enough climbing to keep things exciting, followed by rewarding downhills and flat stretches to
cruise and enjoy the view.
You’ll reach Matara, a lively coastal town where colonial charm meets Sri Lankan tradition.
Enjoy a well-earned seafood lunch and spend the afternoon soaking up the sun on the beach

PREPARING FOR YOUR TRIP
Getting Active
TERRAIN AND CONDITIONING TIPS
To get ready for this trip, we suggest biking regularly beforehand and hitting a few hills
whenever you can. We want you to have the best possible vacation, and while there’s no need
for hardcore training, you should feel comfortable riding at least 20–40 miles each day and
still have the strength and enthusiasm to get up and do it all over again the next day.
To ride safely along the narrow and sometimes trafficked roads, it is important to ride single
file and to develop good balance on your bike. Balance can only be developed by riding on the
road. We recognize that not everyone lives in an area conducive to outdoor riding, but please
keep in mind that while running, riding a stationary bike, spinning and other aerobic exercise
will help improve your strength, endurance and cardiovascular health, these activities will not
help with balance.
BRINGING YOUR OWN GEAR
Don’t forget to bring your helmet and water bottle !
You are welcome to bring your own gear, such as pedals, seat, helmet, toe clips and
cyclometer, to use with a bicycle. However, please inform us in advance if you choose to bring
any of your own things.
STAYING COMFORTABLE
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
● How do I prevent soreness while bicycling? Think padding! Padded shorts make sitting on the
bicycle seat a lot more comfortable, and padded.
● Should I buy a pair of biking shoes for my trip? Rigid shoes maximise the power of your
pedalling stroke, but there’s really no need to purchase a pair of biking shoes just for this
trip. Any athletic shoes — provided they have stiff soles—will be sufficient.
● It’s not really going to rain, is it? As much as we don’t like to think about it, rain is possible
no matter where you travel. Your best bet for staying comfortable during a shower is to wear
quality rain gear that is both waterproof and breathable. A jacket and pants made of Gore-Tex
will keep you dry even in the fiercest downpour.
● Does wearing layers really make a difference? Yes! The trick for staying comfortable in
fluctuating temperatures is to wear three basic layers of lightweight clothing: underwear (to
wick moisture away from your skin), insulating garments (for warmth) and outerwear (to
protect against wind or rain) .
RULES OF BICYCLING SAFETY
● Wear a helmet. Riding without a helmet is extremely dangerous. Our company requires that
all guests wear helmets while cycling.
● Ride predictably, defensively and in a straight line.
● When riding with others, ride single file and maintain several bike lengths between cyclists.
Allow more distance when riding downhill.
● Do not use headphones while riding; you might not hear traffic coming up behind you.
● Be as courteous to motorists as you would like them to be to you, and get completely off
the road when you stop.
● Keep your speed under control on down hills. Use both brakes simultaneously, but be aware
that the front brake is more powerful than the rear. Gently pump your brakes on long
descents for maximum effectiveness. Check brakes frequently to make sure nothing is loose
or dangling.
● Wet slippery roads require extra caution and greater stopping distance —especially on
Down hills. Wet brakes must be dried by pumping before they have an effect, so start braking
early in damp weather.
● When riding on sand or gravel, downshift into low gear so you can spin your pedals faster
while still going slow.
● Obey all traffic regulations. Stop at all stop signs and red lights, yield the right-of-way and
use hand signals when turning, slowing down or stopping. Ride on the extreme left side of the
road, at a safe distance from traffic
● Be cautious around road obstacles. It is safest to dismount and walk your bike across
railroad tracks and cattle guards. If you decide to bike across them, do so at right angles.
Avoid potholes, metal grates, glass, rocks and thorns. Ride at a safe distance from parked cars
and watch for vehicles pulling out and/or doors opening in your path.
● You must yield the right of way to pedestrians. Do not ride on sidewalks.
● When making a right turn, it is safest to pull off the road, dismount, look both ways for
traffic and then walk your bike across the road. Never follow other cyclists when turning
without confirming for yourself that it is safe to do so.
● Listen carefully to approaching motorists. (Look over your shoulder only if you can do so
without swerving.)
● We do not cycle after dark on trips. If you decide to do so on your own, you must bring your
own bike equipped with a white light on the front, a red light on the rear and reflectors on
the spokes and pedals.
● If a dog chases you and you are not able to ride away quickly, stop your bike and walk out of
the dog’s territory, keeping the bike between you and the animal.
● Wear appropriate clothing for bicycling. Brightly coloured clothes make you more visible to
motorists.
● Double-tie shoelaces and tuck them inside your shoes.
● You should wear corrective lenses while bicycling if you use them while driving.
